Lusting after R&Y Augousti Cuffs - Gorgeous!

OMG I want these so badly it is painful!  R&Y Augousti is relaunching its jewelry line, and I would kill for these shagreen and malachite cuffs.  Life is too short to accessorize with jewelry that will turn your skin green.  Always think of price per wear.  That $10 necklace from your favorite fast fashion retailer costs way more in the end if you only wear it once as opposed to pieces that are a bit pricier you wear for years and years.  I bought a lovely (and not outrageously expensive) ring a year and a half ago from Doyle & Doyle and it has barely left my finger.  Staying power!  If you buy things you truly love they are well worth the price.....and don't forget the disdain your grandchildren will feel if they inherit a shoebox of H&M accessories.

R&Y Augousti jewelry available at Barneys New York.

1-stone cuff - $275
2-stone cuff - $300

Nordstrom Rack Makes Me Yearn for NM Last Call

I won't lie.  I set the bar incredibly high regarding my expectations for the new Nordstrom Rack which opened in Union Square this month.  A veteran outlet shopper, I was beyond spoiled while in college with Neiman Marcus Last Call basically in my backyard.  As a co-ed exposed to deeply discounted designer I was worse than a kid in a candy store....I was more like a junkie on the hunt for his next fix.  Coupled with my semi-yearly shopping spree at the Barneys Warehouse Sale, Nordstrom Rack had mighty big shoes to fill.

Here is the wrap up:

Size of Store - I was surprised by how small it was...not sure why, but I was.  Maybe because most Nordstrom stores are three floors and I thought one basement level to be pretty scrawny.

Crowd - Not bad, but I did go on a weeknight.  I don't think I would have the strength to challenge the crowds on the weekends.  I leave all that energy for the Warehouse Sale.

Women's Clothing - Pretty lame fare if I do say, but I did like the James Perse t-shirts.  I rifled through a few racks of garish print dresses and separates even though I have little patience to peruse racks and racks of garbage to find a true gem.  I did see some Kate Spade which was the highest level of 'designer' I found in the clothing department.  And, they had quite a few pairs of Rock and Republic and Seven jeans, so some finds could be hiding there.

Fitting Rooms - I found a few items I liked but decided to forget it when I saw the line for a fitting room was over 10 people long.  I can't imagine what this queue is like on the weekends.

Men's Clothing - From what I read in New York Magazine, the dress shirts were the true find here.  Confirmed.  Stick with the Barneys Warehouse Sale or Century 21 for designer suits.

Shoes - I was beyond disappointed as I walked through rows and rows of Steve Madden 6" tramp pumps, but a light at the end of the tunnel appeared when I found the designer shoe section.  Small, but full of little finds, the only true bummer was that I could only find two mirrors (one wall and one on those stools you find in shoe stores) which lead me to believe the entire store was designed by a man.  I did leave with two very cute pairs of heels for 50% off.

Intimates - Once again, I can't bear to sort through racks of randomly sized bras that could probably fit my head inside one of the cups when reasonable places like Victoria's Secret and American Apparel exist.

Accessories - Belts maybe....bags don't bother.

Cosmetics/toiletries - I was excited to see this section....too bad it's hidden under the escalator.  I found goodies from Philosophy, Stila, and Smashbox, and was surprised to see a huge selection of Neutrogena products.  Whatevs.

Overall-- If you are in a pinch and need a great pair of heels for a party this weekend or looking for standard issue designer denim and t-shirts this is a great place.  For most of the categories in between the pickings are slim, and your time would be better spent hitting up J. Crew, Club Monaco, Uniqlo, etc.  I know it is all about what fell off the back of the truck the day you stop in, but it makes me yearn for Neiman Marcus Last Call, and the tip-of-the-top Barneys Warehouse Sale.

Barneys Warehouse Sale is ON!

The Barneys New York Warehouse Sale is ON, but don't torture yourself just yet.  $500 Louboutins and $200 ratty cashmere sweaters are no real bargain.  Mark your calendars for Friday, February 26th.  This is the day I believe they will do final markdowns.  And before you go, don't forget to read my "Barneys Warehouse Sale Survival Strategy".  These tips are a must read for any avid sample sale'r, crowd control manager, or torture resistance training.  PS- I added a little countdown clock to the right as a helpful reminder.  Bring it Simon Doonan!

Have a great weekend!

Barneys Warehouse Sale Survival Strategy

You know what your mother said about why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.... Well for my first post I feel like that is what I am doing. But who cares, let's jump in head first.

This is really one of my best strategical moves in finding expensive things at rock bottom prices. The Barneys Warehouse Sale happens twice a year, and is really the only time I let myself completely splurge and buy whatever I can get my hands on (disclaimer: whatever I can get my hands on that I am absolutely in love with and find the deal too good to leave for someone else). This is not shopping for the faint of heart. Get ready to disco with throngs of people you don't know, throw some 'bows, and see someone your mother's age with no shirt trying on a Balenciaga mini-dress dress from two years ago.

Plan of attack:

1. Find out when the sale ends. Go the day before when everything is marked down 60-75% off the sale price. Don't torture yourself by going early and getting a sneak peak at what won't be there in two weeks when it is actually affordable.

2. Give yourself a 3-hour window to shop. At 11am I waited outside the building to get inside for 15 minutes, in line for shoe matches for a solid 25, and another 30 to check out. You don't want to be rushed because trust me, there is a reason this only happens twice a year: it is all human patience can bear.

3. Wear clothes such as leggings, tank tops, and ballet flats. Mobility and body-hugging are key. You don't want to be messing with shoe laces or trying on dresses over jeans. There are no dressing rooms, so thongs are probably not a good option either.

4. ipod is critical. It is the only thing that keeps me sane. It really helps you focus and block out the crowd.

5. Something I wish more people would wise up to: For Christ's sake, please try on the shoe available before waiting in the heinous line to get the match. If the shoe doesn't fit or looks horrible put it back on the rack so it is available to others. If you love it, then get the other one. Saves a ton of time, and is courteous to your fellow shoppers.

5. Get ready to sort through racks of garbage to find the diamond in the rough. Obviously no one wants Kate Moss TopShop from like 2 years ago, but I always tend to find lovely little cashmere pieces which are cash-miracally expensive full price. I always look for pieces that transcend seasons and trends. Buy things you can modify to wear year-round and that won't go out of style in 6 months.

Ok, so you may be asking yourself what I came away with today. Here is the lowdown:

Original Price:
Co-op cashmere racerback tank dress - $158
Co-op cotton thick strap knit tank - $98
Ernest Sewn high-waisted jeans - $195
Castaner wedge espadrilles - $160
Barneys New York brown leather platform wedge sandals - $220
Total: $831

My Price:
Co-op cashmere racerback tank dress - $20.70
Co-op cotton thick strap knit tank - $14.70
Ernest Sewn high-waisted jeans - $20.70
Castaner wedge espadrilles - $32.00
Barneys New York brown leather platform wedge sandals - $44.00
Total: $132.10

The numbers don't lie kids. Remember to buy what you love, transcend trends and seasons, and hold out till the bitter end before you go!

Imelda Marcos is coming...buy more shoes!
