Forget the showstopper jewelry stores of Madison Avenue where you need sunglasses to walk past their perfectly polished 10 carat diamond solitaires. My favorite little place in Manhattan for baubles and sparkly things is Doyle & Doyle on Orchard between Houston and Stanton.
This unassuming shop houses amazingly accessible estate jewelry and reproductions. They carry a well-edited selection from engagement rings to cuff links and everything in between. The store was started by two sisters in 1998, and I love nothing more than to support family-run, local businesses....especially now when we would like them to make it through Recession '09. The pieces are displayed like art in wall-hung glass cases lined in velvet, and the staff is nothing but incredibly helpful and attentive. I dropped in to just browse in January of this year and was immediately taken with ring that seemed destined to run around on my finger forever. It was a "Happy 2009" present to myself, and it was one of the most worth while purchases I have ever made.
Doyle & Doyle also has an online shop which is perfect out-of-towners (and for hours of daydreaming/procrastination). My favorite section to peruse is the "Gift's Under $500" category: fabulous pieces you can sort by type and price range.
Life is way too short to wear garbage jewelry. Find something you love, wear it always, and pass it on to your grandchildren....now that is a great investment!
